The Holy Spirit assists those who pray and gives them help to work even though they are "in their weakness." Paul writes to the church in Rome "In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express."1 It is a great mystery to us when the Holy Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words to God on our behalf. In those moments, when in agony of the soul we approach God, we find no human words to express our condition or needs. This is when the Spirit, a comforter indeed, steps in to work on our behalf. "Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out 'Abba, Father.'"2 The Holy Spirit makes us aware of our family ties to God and brings us into a true relationship as sons to him.
The Holy Spirit seals us for the day of redemption and safeguards our salvation. "And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption."3
