Holy Spirit Witness 74

The Advocate

Root of JesseThe Holy Spirit will witness to Jesus Christ according to John 15.26, "When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father — the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father — he will testify about me." Jesus acknowledged that he came empowered by the Holy Spirit in Luke 4.18 when he said, "The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free," In a similar way, the Holy Spirit would be given to Jesus' followers after he had been glorified to help them witness. In John 7.39 we read, "By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified." The Spirit was operative in the Incarnation, the coming of Jesus as a baby. This is a great mystery. Jesus asserts in John 15.26 that the Holy Spirit will validate his ministry, "When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father — the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father — he will testify about me." The Messiah of the servant songs of Isaiah 42.1 will also be anointed with the Holy Spirit witness, "Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will bring justice to the nations." Jesus on coming out of the baptism waters in Luke 3.21 "When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened." He was anointed by the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove as a public witness to those who watched. At the birth of Christ, when the shoot comes from the stump of Jesse, then the Spirit of the Lord will rest upon him as written in Isaiah 11.1-2a, "A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him."
