Isaiah 44.3-4 announces, "For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour out my Spirit on your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants. They will spring up like grass in a meadow, like poplar trees by flowing streams." The followers of Christ are to have Christ's Holy Spirit poured upon them to refresh and renew them in their new life in Christ like new grass in a meadow or poplar trees by flowing streams. The fruits of the Holy Spirit are essentially the virtues of this new life in Christ. Zechariah 4.6 declares, "So he said to me, 'This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: 'Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,' says the Lord Almighty.'" The indwelling Holy Spirit is the key to a fulfilled life in Christ.
When faced with tremendous odds, our own power and strength are insufficient but the Holy Spirit can call on the full resources of God for those who have abundant life in Christ. Peter says in 1 Peter 1.10-11, "Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke of the grace that was to come to you, searched intently and with the greatest care, trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when he predicted the sufferings of the Messiah and the glories that would follow." The Holy Spirit indwelt the prophets as they prophesied to his coming. Joel indicates that the New Covenant outpouring of Christ's Holy Spirit was general rather than special. The Holy Spirit indwelt the prophets intermittently and can be permanently in us in our new life in Christ.
