Spirit Lord

Joshua and his friends The Holy One indwells individuals whom God uses for his service. Joshua for example had the Spirit of God before he was commissioned for the Lord's service. "Joshua, the son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit..."¹ Othniel, Caleb's younger brother, is given the Spirit in order to judge Israel. "The spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he judged Israel."² As Sampson grew so the Spirit stirred within him. "And the spirit of the Lord began to stir him in Mahanehdan..." ³

The Spirit of the Lord is also removed from those who are disobedient to God. "Now the spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord tormented him."⁴ Once the Holy One leaves Saul, an evil spirit from the Lord enters him. Although prophecy is a phenomenon from very early times, Moses is the great prophet who is indwelt by the Holy Spirit. ⁵

Spirit's Cause

Gideon blows the trumpet The Spirit stirred Gideon into action to declare war on the followers of Baal. "But the spirit of the Lord took possession of Gideon; and he sounded the trumpet, and the Abiezrites were called out to follow him."⁶ Similarly, the Samson is given strength at the necessary time. "And the spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him, and he tore the lion asunder as one tears a kid; and he had nothing in his hand."⁷ (See also Judges 14.19, 15.14 for further instances).

David is instructed by the Holy One as to the form, size and make up of the Temple. "The pattern of all that he had by the spirit, of the courts of the house of the Lord, and of all the chambers." ⁸ Matthew Henry comments, "It must not be left to man's art or invention to contrive it, but it must be framed by divine institution." Thus the Holy One guided the prophets.
