Could Forgive Sins

Jesus HealsGod's power was clearly apparent to the disciples in Jesus miracles over natural forces during his ministry. In Mark 4.39 we read that when Jesus was aboard the ship on the Sea of Galilee and a storm arose, "He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, 'Quiet! Be still!' Then the wind died down and it was completely calm." Here, Jesus controlled the weather, or as some people might say nowadays "mother nature." The story of the water turned to wine in John 2.13 again exhibited Jesus creative hand in changing one liquid, "water," into something entirely different, "wine." We read "and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, 'Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.'" Jesus proved his deity by not only controlling the natural elements but also by physically healing a disabled person. Only a powerful spiritual force could heal but Jesus' word in John 5.8-9 was enough. "Jesus said to him, 'Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.' At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked." Jesus showed that he had control over the medical sphere which was the province of God alone.

Over Evil Spirits

Jesus PowerJesus healed the sick and also cast out a demon spirit in Mark 1.25-26, "'Be quiet!' said Jesus sternly. 'Come out of him!' The impure spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek." In this way, Jesus not only healed the paralytic man but also authenticated his own person as God who alone could forgive sins and in this way shared his credentials with the world! Note the particularly unusual words that Jesus used on this occasion in Matthew 9.2. "Some men brought to him a paralyzed man, lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the man, 'Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven.'" Jesus forgave this man's sins thus showing that he had God's spiritual authority to forgive sins. This was one of the aspects of Jesus' ministry most objectionable to the Pharisees for only God himself could forgive sins. As the One Almighty God, Jesus even had final victory over death.
