God's power was clearly apparent in the miracles that Jesus performed during his ministry. "And he awoke and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Peace! Be still!" And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm."1 Here Jesus controlled the elements of the weather. The story of the water turned to wine exhibits Jesus' creative hand in turning one element into something entirely different.2 Jesus proves his deity by not only controlling the elements but also by healing a lame man. Only a powerful spiritual force could heal but "Jesus said to him, 'Rise, take up your pallet, and walk.' And at once the man was healed, and he took up his pallet and walked."3 Jesus showed that he had control over the medical sphere which was the province of God alone.
He healed the sick and also cast out demon spirits. "But Jesus rebuked him saying, 'Be silent, and come out of him!' And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying with a loud voice, came out of him."4 Jesus controlled evil spirits. In this way, Jesus not only healed the paralytic man but also authenticated his origins as God himself. Note the particularly unusual words that Jesus used on this occasion. "And when Jesus saw their faith he said to the paralytic, 'Take heart, my son, your sins are forgiven.'"5 Jesus forgave sins thus showing that he had God's spiritual authority. This was one of the aspects of Jesus' ministry most objectionable to the Pharisees. As Mighty God, Jesus is the victorious warrior who obtains final victory.
