Resurrection Promise

Temple Mount JerusalemJesus could give life back to those who had died. He was "Lord over death." As God, he gave resurrection to Christians who had fallen asleep in Christ. Mark 10.33-34 read, "'We are going up to Jerusalem,' he (Jesus) said, 'and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles, who will mock him and spit on him, flog him and kill him. Three days later he will rise.'" Jesus here prophesied his own persecution, death and resurrection.

Upcoming Death

Christ on the CrossJesus took the Twelve aside and told them clearly what was going to happen to him. Jesus informed them of his own upcoming death on the cross even though he knew that he was in fact Lord over death and had power over it he was willing to submit to it for the sake of his followers down the ages.

Village Called Nain

Widow of NainJesus as the Lord over death was clearly seen in the raising of the widow in the village called Nain. "Nain in Galilee" was about 9 miles south of Nazareth and today has a population of about 1,800 and is called "Nein" in Israel. We were told in Luke 7.11-13, "Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him. As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out - the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, "Don't cry."

Filled with Awe

Jesus at NainThen Jesus went up and did something no other orthodox Jew would ever do, that is he touched the coffin bearing a dead person. Those carrying it stood still whether out of surprise or shock at Jesus' action we do not know. Jesus then said to the dead man in Luke 7.15-16, "'Young man, I say to you, get up!' The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother. They were all filled with awe and praised God. 'A great prophet has appeared among us,' they said, 'God has come to help his people.'" Luke 7.17 then reported that this news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country. Jesus was Lord over the living as well as the dead and gave a son back to his grieving mother.✞
