Jesus Healing Power

Peter's Mother-in-law's HouseThe New Testament is full of examples of Jesus healing power. Matthew 4.24 reads, "News about him spread all over Syria, and people brought to him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed, those having seizures, and the paralyzed; and he healed them." There seems to have been nothing that Jesus could not cure. One particular instance occurred at the home of Peter in the town of Capernaum at the Northern end of the Sea of Galilee. This miracle is recorded in Luke 4.38-39 where we read, "Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Peter. Now Peter's mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her. So he bent over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them." Jesus healing power and lordship extended still further. His healing power could, as God, completely heal individuals. This was not a slow transition but an instantaneous healing miracle.

Peter's Mother-in-Law

Modern SurgeryThe little house which belonged to Peter's mother-in-law where this miracle took place still stands today, on the shores of the Sea of Galilee in the village of Capernaum. It was extended very early in the life of the church to accomodate travellers and pilgrims and is now topped with a large church on a concreter structure. On this occasion, Jesus healing power was poured forth on Peter's mother-in-law. He had just left the synagogue, which was among the oldest synagogues in the world, and the remains of which still stand just a short walk up the road from Peter's mother-in-law's house. Interestingly, there were a number of Christian symbols like an anchor and a fish on grave markers in this ancient cemetery from the very earliest times. These engraving were early Christian symbols.
