Power Over Death

Model of Jerusalem in 200BCThe disciples were on their way up to Jerusalem, with Jesus Christ leading the way. They were astonished and afraid at the coming events that Jesus told them about. Jesus took the Twelve disciples, the inner group, aside and explained to them in Mark 10.32-34 what was going to happen. "We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles, who will mock him and spit on him, flog him and kill him. Three days later he will rise." Jesus was instructing his followers about his power over death though they didn't seem to understand it!✞

Jesus' Compassion

Jesus Raises a Young Man in NainLuke 7.11-17 exhibited Jesus power over death. "Soon afterward, he (Jesus) went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went with him. As he approached the gate of the town, a man who had died was being carried out. He was his mother's only son, and she was a widow; and with her was a large crowd from the town. When the Lord saw her, he had compassion for her and said to her, 'Do not weep.' Then he came forward and touched the bier (the coffin), and the bearers stood still. And he said, 'Young man, I say to you, rise!' The dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother. Fear seized all of them; and they glorified God, saying, 'A great prophet has risen among us!' and 'God has looked favorably on his people!' This word about him spread throughout Judea and all the surrounding country." We note here that "soon afterward" was translated by some ancient authorities as "the next day" so this could have happened the next morning. Now the disciples had seen an example of Jesus power over not only sickness but death. This power is still available to Jesus' followers today.✞
