Directs God's People

Sheep FlockSaint Paul spoke to the elders from Ephesus in Acts 20.28 saying, "Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood." The "shepherds of the church of God" in many manuscripts may also be translated as "shepherds of the Lord" indicating the equality in the Early Church of "God" and "the Lord" meaning "Jesus". Similarly, "with his own blood" in this verse may be equally rendered "with the blood of his own Son." The Holy Spirit appointed leaders in the church who in the New Testament were variously called bishops, overseers or elders. A church may fancy the idea that theirs is a democratic process, but it is not! The Holy Spirit directs God's people and not the church. The Holy Spirit is totally responsible for this task.

Merino SheepJesus said that there were two types of people in Matthew 25.31-46. We read, "All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left." Those on his right were "blessed of the Father" and those who were on the left were not. The Holy Spirit appointed those with the necessary qualifications, qualities and characteristics to lead God's people, who are the Holy Spirit sheep. Their appointment was totally in line with the teachings of Scripture. The church's job is to be guided by that unseen yet powerful hand through these under-shepherds.
