Isaiah Nations Light (Revelation 21.23)

"The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp." (Revelation 21.23)✞

Lamb is its Light

Seven Golden LampstandsThe city of God needs no created "light," because God is in the midst of her. Isaiah wrote in Isaiah 60.19-21 "The sun will no more be your light by day, nor will the brightness of the moon shine on you, for the Lord will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory. Your sun will never set again, and your moon will wane no more; the Lord will be your everlasting light, and your days of sorrow will end. Then all your people will be righteous and they will possess the land forever. They are the shoot I have planted, the work of my hands, for the display of my splendor." Only when we see things in the light of God, do we see things as they really are. "For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light." says David in Psalm 36.9. Some things which seem vastly important in the moment are unimportant in the light of God.✞

The Gentiles will Come

Cathedral Figure of Jesus Lord of GloryIsaiah had a vision in Isaiah 2.2-4 "In the last days the mountain of the Lord's temple will be established as the highest of the mountains; it will be exalted above the hills, and all nations will stream to it. Many peoples will come and say, 'Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the temple of the God of Jacob. He will teach us his ways, so that we may walk in his paths.'" Isaiah speaks of the day when "all nations" will go up to Mount Zion to be taught the law and to learn to walk in the ways of God. He also writes in Isaiah 11.12, "He [God] will raise a banner for the nations and gather the exiles of Israel; he will assemble the scattered people of Judah from the four quarters of the earth." It is Israel's privilege says Isaiah 49.6. "He writes: "It is too small a thing for you to be my servant to restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel I have kept. I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth." Nations who never knew God will run to him says Isaiah 55.5, "Surely you will summon nations you know not, and nations you do not know will come running to you, because of the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, for he has endowed you with splendor." Jeremiah 16.19-21 tells us, "Lord, my strength and my fortress, my refuge in time of distress, to you the nations will come from the ends of the earth and say, 'Our ancestors possessed nothing but false gods, worthless idols that did them no good. Do people make their own gods? Yes, but they are not gods!' Therefore I will teach them — this time I will teach them my power and might. Then they will know that my name is the Lord." The Gentiles will come to God from the ends of the earth, confessing and repenting of the error of their ways.✞
