Jerusalem Precious Stones (Revelation 21.19-21)

"The foundations of the city walls were decorated with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald, the fifth sardonyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst [the precise identification of some of these precious stones is uncertain.] The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each gate made of a single pearl. The great street of the city was of pure gold, like transparent glass." (Revelation 21.19-21)✞

New Jerusalem

Precious StonesThe sight of the New Jerusalem precious stones in the foundation walls made of gemstones showed that it was a place of beauty and purity that will last forever. The gold and precious stones also symbolized the beauty and excellence of the church. The Jerusalem Temple was the primary place of worship as the center piece of God's presence on earth. No temple will be needed however in the new city because God's presence will be everywhere. He will be worshipped throughout the city, and nothing will hinder us from being with him. There will be no sun to give light for the Lord God himself will be its light.✞

Twelve Pearl Gates

CubeThe city's measurements describe a place that will hold all God's people and will be perfect for them. There are twelve gates like twelve pearls. The variety of precious stones and the measurements are twelve or multiples of twelve which is the number for God's people. This is comprised of three which is God's number multiplied by four which is the human being's number. There were twelve tribes in Israel, and twelve Apostles who were leaders in the church. The walls were one hundred and forty four cubits which was twelve by twelve cubits or a massive two hundred feet thick. There are twelve layers in the walls, and twelve gates in the city. The standard unit of measurement the angel used was literally, "by a human measure."
