"Then the angel said to me, "Write this, 'Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!' And he added, 'These are the true words of God.'"(Revelation 19.9)

The Church

RingThe concept of the Bride of Christ and the relationship between Jesus Christ and his church was a model of marriage. It went far back into the Old Testament. Again and again, the prophets thought of Israel as the "chosen bride of God." Hosea heard God say in Hosea 2.19, "I will betroth you to me forever; I will betroth you in righteousness and justice, in love and compassion," Isaiah 54.5. added "For your Maker is your husband — the Lord Almighty is his name — the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; he is called the God of all the earth"

Marriage Symbolism

MarriageMarriage symbolism ran all through the Gospels also. Jesus described the marriage feast in Matthew 22.2 where "The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son." In Mark 2.19, Jesus also spoke of the "guests of the bridegroom." The marriage was further described in a parable in Matthew 25.1, "At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom." Saint Paul in 2 Corinthians 11.2 spoke of "betrothing the Church" like a pure virgin to Christ. "I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I promised you to one husband, to Christ, so that I might present you as a pure virgin to him." For Saint Paul, in Ephesians 5.21-33, the relationship of Christ to his Church was the great and ideal model of the relationship between a husband and his wife. He wrote, "Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church for we are members of his body. For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. This is a profound mystery — but I am talking about Christ and the church. However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband." Genesis 2.24 gave us this authority, "That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh."
