Long White Robe (Revelation 1.13-14)

"And among the lampstands was someone like a son of man, dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest. The hair on his head was white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire." (Revelation 1.13-14)✞

Golden Sash Around

Jesus ascendingPriests, princes and kings in New Testament times wore a "long white robe reaching to the feet" and a high girdle or "golden sash around the chest." This was the dress of important people like the High Priest in the Temple in Jerusalem. The robe of Jonathan was also described this way in 1 Samuel 24.5 and 11 and that of King Saul in the Old Testament was similar. Jesus' robe as the risen Christ at the Ascension was also a "royal" garment. No longer was Jesus to be treated like a criminal on a cross, he was now dressed like a victorious king and the preeminent High Priest.✞

Daniel's Vision

Warrior ChristIn the vision of Daniel in Daniel 10.5 the divine figure who came to tell Daniel the truth of God was also clothed in a fine linen "Daniel 10.5" "I looked up and there before me was a man dressed in linen, with a belt of fine gold from Uphaz around his waist." If this were a pre-incarnation appearance of Jesus, the very dress of the risen Lord indicated his three fold ministry as a prophet, a priest and a king.

Prophet, Priest and King

Like a prophet he was the one who brought the truth of God to human beings.✞

Like a priest he enabled others to enter into the presence of God.✞

Like a king he was the one to whom God has given power and authority for ever.✞

Jesus in Revelation

Man with white hair and beardJesus' appearance is further described in Revelation where his hair is "white like wool as white as snow." This is reminiscent of the description of Almighty God himself in Daniel 7.9 which reads, "As I looked, thrones were set in place, and the Ancient of Days took his seat. His clothing was as white as snow; the hair of his head was white like wool. His throne was flaming with fire, and its wheels were all ablaze."

All Knowing Nature

Blazing FireWhite hair was deemed to be a mark of a person of outstanding practical wisdom and absolutely pure motives. Revelation tells us that Jesus' "eyes were like blazing fire" which indicated his fierce all-knowing nature.✞
