Long White Robe
(Revelation 1.13-14)
Page 27

"And among the lampstands was someone like a son of man, dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a gold sash around his chest. The hair on his head was white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire." (Revelation 1.13-14)

Gold Sash Around

Jesus ascendingPriests, princes and kings wore "long white robes reaching down to the feet" and a high girdle or "a gold sash around his chest" in New and Old Testament times. This was the fashion for important people like kings, princes and particularly for the High Priest in the Temple in Jerusalem. It is interesting that the robe of King Saul in the Old Testament was described in this way too in 1 Samuel 24.5 and 11 and that of Jonathan was similar. Jesus robe as the risen 'Son of Man" at the Ascension was also a "royal" garment. No longer was Jesus to be viewed as a half naked criminal on a cross, he was now elegantly dressed like a victorious king and a pre-eminent High Priest.✞

Daniel Vision

Warrior ChristThe long white robe worn by Jesus in heaven was described elsewhere too. In Daniel's vision of Daniel 10.5 the divine figure who came to tell Daniel the truth of God was also dressed in fine linen, "I looked up and there before me was a man dressed in linen, with a belt of fine gold from Uphaz around his waist." If this were a pre-incarnation appearance of Jesus, the very dress of the risen Lord indicated his three fold ministry on earth as a king, a priest and a prophet. "Uphaz" by the way was probably another name for the gold producing center in "Ophir" mentioned in Jeremiah 10.9 which read, "Hammered silver is brought from Tarshish and gold from Uphaz. What the craftsman and goldsmith have made is then dressed in blue and purple — all made by skilled workers."

King, Priest and Prophet

Like a king Jesus was the one to whom God had given power and authority for ever.

Like a priest Jesus himself was the way into the presence of God.

Like a prophet Jesus was the one who brought the truth of God to human beings.

Snowy White Hair

White Hair and BeardThe appearance of Jesus hair in Revelation was described as "white like wool as white as snow." This was reminiscent of the description of Almighty God himself in Daniel 7.9, "As I looked, thrones were set in place, and the Ancient of Days took his seat. His clothing was as white as snow; the hair of his head was white like wool." The term "Ancient of Days" was a Biblical title for Almighty God.✞

Pure Motives

Blazing Fire"White hair" was deemed to be a mark of a person of outstanding wisdom and absolutely pure motives. Revelation explained also that Jesus' "eyes were like blazing fire" which indicated his fierce all-knowing nature.
