Life After Death
(Revelation 11.10-12)

"The inhabitants of the earth will gloat over them and will celebrate by sending each other gifts, because these two prophets had tormented those who live on the earth. But after the three and a half days a breath [or "Spirit"] of life from God entered them, and they stood on their feet, and terror struck those who saw them. Then they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, 'Come up here.' And they went up to Heaven in a cloud, while their enemies looked on." (Revelation 11.10-12)✞

Roman Destruction

Jerusalem is Destroyed in AD 70Jerusalem was destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD on the orders of Titus who lived between 39-81 AD and who was the son of the Emperor Vespasian (9-79 AD). For the destruction of the Temple and City of Jerusalem, Titus was awarded a triumphal Arch in Rome which commemorated his victory. The Arch of Titus can be seen to this day as one of the "must see" items on any tour of Rome. Nearly a million Jews were slaughtered in the fall of Jerusalem, and the temple treasures were plundered. Maybe John of Patmos was concerned that the Christian victims know that their deaths were not in vain. Perhaps he wanted them to understand the reality of life after death. For "three and a half days" the two witnesses lay dead in the streets and then the breath of life from God suddenly filled them and they experienced life after death. The term "breath of life" may be translated as "spirit of life" and reminds us of a passage in Ezekiel 37.5 in the Valley of the Dry Bones story, "This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones: I will make breath [the Hebrew for this word can also mean "wind" or "spirit"] enter you, and you will come to life."

Jerusalem Resurrection

resurrectionHave you ever wondered what life after death would feel like? Death is stone cold and seemingly final. Everything stops and closes down, the pumping of the heart, the gasps for breath and the brain waves. Life after death is like a new birth. A baby emerges from his or her mother, a new individual. That is resurrection living. Though the whole world had rejoiced at the deaths of the two witnesses, they finally ascended in triumph to Heaven in a unique experience which every committed Christian will one day experience and enjoy!
