Scorpion's Tail Stings
(Revelation 9.11)

"They had tails with stingers like scorpions, and in their tails they had power to torment people for five months. They had as king over them the angel of the Abyss, whose name in Hebrew is 'Abaddon' and in Greek 'Apollyon.'" (Revelation 9.11)✞

Five Months

ScorpionThe ordinary locust devastated vegetation and crops but thankfully it was not harmful to human beings. The Revelation demonic locusts however had the power of scorpions added to them and "scorpion's tail stings which tormented people for five months." The scorpion's stings were still one of the scourges of Palestine. The scorpion was like a small lobster, with claws to clutch its prey. Unlike the lobster, it had a long tail, which curved up over its back and its head. At the end of the tail there was a curved claw and stinger which was called a "telson" which when it has injecting its poison paralyzed its captive. The claw of the scorpion was also found in lobsters, shrimps, prawns and horseshoe crabs.✞

Death Stalker

Brown ScorpionScorpions in Palestine were up to six inches in length and with their claw could strike and secrete poison as the blow was delivered into its victim. They lived in cracks in walls and literally under almost every stone. Campers in the Near East lifted up and examined the underside of every rock before a tent was pitched in case a "death stalker scorpion" otherwise called the "Palestine Yellow Scorpion" was beneath it. A scorpion's sting was worse than the sting of a hornet. It was not necessarily fatal, but it could in some instances kill a human being. Of the almost 1,500 species of scorpion around the World only two were known to have venom capable of killing an adult human being, one in Israel and the other in Brazil.

Demonic Locusts

LocustsThe scorpion attack in Revelation lasted for five months which was almost the same as the total life-span of a "locust" from birth, through the larva stage, to death. It was as if one whole generation of demonic locusts was launched upon the earth all at once. Such would be the terrible suffering caused by the scorpion's sting that men and women would long for death but would not be able to find it.✞

Wish to Die

DeathThe prophet Job spoke in Job 3.21 of the supreme misery of those "who long for death that does not come, who search for it more than for hidden treasure." Jeremiah 8.3 also told of the day when people "will prefer death to life." A Roman poet and orator called Cornelius Gallus in BC 70-26 added, "Worse than any wound is to wish to die and yet not be able to do so."
