Angel Trumpet Blasts (Revelation 8.5-6)

"Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and hurled it on the earth, and there came peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning and an earthquake. Then the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared to sound them." (Revelation 8.5-6)✞

Trumpet will Sound

TrumpetIn the visions of both the Old Testament and the New Testament, seven trumpets blown by angels one at a time are the symbols of the intervention of God in history. All these images, and there are many of them, go back to the scene at Mount Sinai when Moses gave the Law of God to the people in Exodus 19.16, "On the morning of the third day there was thunder and lightning, with a thick cloud over the mountain, and a very loud trumpet blast. Everyone in the camp trembled." The law was given to Moses and then to the people accompanied by great peals of thunder, lightning and a thick cloud on the mountain.✞

The Day of the Lord

AngelsThe angel trumpets may have been made by silver trumpets made by Moses in Numbers 10.2, "Make two trumpets of hammered silver, and use them for calling the community together and for having the camps set out." More likely the trumpets were the "shofar" made out of a ram's horn. These were the traditional sacred horns of the ancient Hebrews. Trumpets also became an unchanging part of the apparatus of the Day of the Lord. In that day, the great trumpet will be blown and it will summon back the exiles from every land as in Isaiah 27.13. "And in that day a great trumpet will sound. Those who were perishing in Assyria and those who were exiled in Egypt will come and worship the Lord on the holy mountain in Jerusalem." On the Day of the Lord, the seven trumpets will be blown in Zion and the alarm sounded on the holy mountain. Joel 2.1 gives us a picture of the last days in these Old Testament visions, "Blow the trumpet in Zion; sound the alarm on my holy hill. Let all who live in the land tremble, for the day of the Lord is coming. It is close at hand." Saint Paul also speaks in 1 Corinthians 15.51-52 "Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed - in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed."

The Dead Raised

Trumpets"The trumpet of God," will sound when Christ comes again. 1 Thessalonians 4.16 also tells us, "For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first." As in Matthew 24.31 we read, "And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other." This happens when the elect are finally gathered in.✞
