Write Christian Names (Revelation 3:12-13)

"The one who is victorious I will make a pillar in the temple of my God. Never again will they leave it. I will write on them the name of my God and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which is coming down out of heaven from my God; and I will also write on them my new name. Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches." (Revelation 3.12-13)✞

New Jerusalem

Moses and AaronWhen God told Moses about the blessing which Aaron and the priests were to pronounce over the people, he said in Numbers 6.27, "So they will put my name on the Israelites, and I will bless them." In Revelation 3.12-13, it is the same idea. It is as if Jesus himself were to write Christian names upon Israel so that all may know that they are Jesus Christ's people. Faithful Jewish people also have a special place, I belive, in the New Jerusalem.✞

Write My Name On

Emperor TiberiasOn the faithful Christian, "the name of city of my God, the new Jerusalem," is to be written. This stands for the gift of citizenship in the eternal city of God, which is coming down from heaven. On the faithful Christian, Christ will write our Christian names. The people of Philadelphia, "the city of brotherly love", knew all about taking a new name. When in 17 AD a terrible earthquake devastated their city, Tiberius, the Emperor, dealt kindly with them, remitting their taxes according to Tacitus Annales 2.47, John Lydus de Mensibus 4.115 and making them a generous gift to rebuild it. In response, the city granted honors to Tiberius by naming the city Tiberias on the shores of the Sea of Galilee after him.✞
