"To the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: 'These are the words of him who is holy and true, who holds the key of David. What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open. I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.'" (Revelation 3.7-8)

Missionary Opportunity

Door of OpportunityThere is an open door of missionary opportunity before every Christian. To be a missionary is to be sent into an area to perform ministries of evangelism, to share the Good News or to teach, educate or engage in healing ministries. To be a missionary, we do not however need to go overseas out of our country or even our own neighborhood to find it. Within our home, within our circle of friends, within our work place, there are those to be won for Christ. To use the door of opportunity is at once our privilege and our responsibility.

Ancient Door

Philadelphia ancient CityPhiladelphia which is now known as "Alasehir" in Turkey had proved faithful but the reward for her faithfulness was surprisingly still more work to do for Christ. In the way of Christ, the reward of work well done is more work to do. It has also been suggested that the door which was set before the Philadelphians was none other than Jesus himself. This reminds us of his words in John 10.7 where he describes himself as "the gate for the sheep." Just as a shepherd in the Middle East today sleeps across the opening to the sheepfold to prevent a predator entering and attacking the sheep, so Jesus guards his own who have entered the sheepfold through him. Jesus himself becomes a door to protect his sheep.

Holman Hunt's Painting

Holman Hunt's PaintingWith Jesus Christ, the new kingdom of David is inaugurated and so the Jesus door is there to admit only willing, contrite persons to the kingdom of God and to bar the way to all others. Jesus confirmed this in John 14.6 when he said, "I am the way, and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."
