Revelation Sardis City (Revelation 3.1-2)

"To the angel [or "messenger"] of the church in Sardis write: 'These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits [that is, "the sevenfold Spirit"] of God and the seven stars. I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead. Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have found your deeds unfinished in the sight of my God.'" (Revelation 3.1-2)✞

Some Gigantic Watchtower

SardisThe sides of the ridge of Sardis City, were smoothly precipitous, and only where the spur met the side of Mount Tmolus was there any possible approach into the city, and even that was hard and steep. It has been said that Sardis City stood like some gigantic watchtower guarding the Hermus valley.

Two Sardis Cities

Hephaistos, GreeceThe Greek name for "Sardis," is "Sardeis" and is really a plural noun, for there were two Sardis cities, one on the plateau and one in the valley beneath. The time came when the narrow space on the top of the plateau was too small for the expanding city, and the city then grew around the foot of the spur on which the citadel stood.
