Thyatira Christian Community (2.20-22)

"You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess. By her teaching she misleads my servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols. I have given her time to repent of her immorality, but she is unwilling. So I will cast her on a bed of suffering, and I will make those who commit adultery with her suffer intensely, unless they repent of her ways."(Revelation 2.20-22)

Queen Jezebel"Jezebel," a pagan queen of Israel, and the wicked wife of King Ahab, was considered the most evil woman who ever lived. The scheming and treacherous "Jezebel" introduced pagan customs into the religion of Israel. This new "Jezebel," was doing the same to Christianity. "Jezebel," was obviously more concerned about her own selfish pleasure and freedom than about the needs and concerns of fellow believers.

ThyatiraThe letter to "Thyatira." praises the virtuous growth of this small Christian community but admonishes them for tolerating a false prophet. Her fate is sealed, but there is hope of repentance for her followers. They are warned against Satanic power or knowledge. Beyond the literal meaning, these images convey a sense of Almighty God's wrath on sin and the Good Shepherd's providential care over his church."Jezebel" was unwilling to repent. In his mercy, God has given us time to decide to follow him. Only our stubbornness stands in our way. Do you know of a "Jezebel" in your own Christian community?

"The Revelation of John to Jesus Christ."
