Paul Greets 79

Dear Friend Epenetus

Cenchrea HarborIn Acts 28.17 we read that "Three days later he called together the leaders of the Jews. They arranged to meet Paul on a certain day, and came in even larger numbers to the place where he was staying. From morning till evening he explained and declared to them the kingdom of God and tried to convince them about Jesus from the Law of Moses and from the Prophets."

Some would not Believe

Roman HouseThe reaction to Paul's urgings seems to have been mixed, for we read in Acts 28.24, "Some were convinced by what he said, but others would not believe." As a result of this in Acts 28:30-31 we read that, "For two whole years, Paul stayed there in his own rented house and welcomed all who came to see him. Boldly and without hindrance he preached the kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ."

Household of Faith

Cenchrea MapPaul later commends the Christians in Cenchrea in Romans 16.1-5, "I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a servant of the church in the Cenchrea household of faith. I ask you to receive her in the Lord in a way worthy of the saints and to give her any help she may need from you, for she has been a great help to many people, including me. Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus." "They risked their lives for me. Not only I but all the churches of the Gentiles are grateful to them. Greet also the church that meets at their house. Greet my dear friend Epenetus, who was the first convert to Christ in the province of Asia."

Greet the Friends

Emperor GaiusLater, Paul adds more people to be commended in Romans 16.10-11, "Greet Apelles, tested and approved in Christ. Greet those who belong to the household of Aristobulus. Greet Herodion, my relative. Greet those in the household of Narcissus who are in the Lord." Finally, he adds in Romans 16.23-24, "Gaius, whose hospitality I and the whole church here enjoy, sends you his greetings. Erastus, who is the city's director of public works, and our brother Quartus send you their greetings." Paul obviously had a great effect on many persons in that area both of high and low status.✞
