Dyak Chief

At the right is a sample of the images available in our Borneo gallery (#170 Dyak Chief). This photograph was taken by Canon Spencer on a glass lantern slide plate while visiting one of his missionary children ministering in Borneo. The people back home in Canada were fascinated by other people in different parts of the world and especially by the native people in those countries to whom the Christian Missionaries were sent. This Dyak Chief appears to be holding a club and a shield and dressed in traditional attire. Many of the details of these customs and attire were lost with the infiltration of Western Colonial Powers.
