About Us
This website entitled "HiVu Photos" was set up in June 2000 to provide information about magic lantern slides as reference materials for history buffs. Canon P. L. Spencer took many pictures and collected other factory made images of many parts of the world. He travelled widely during his ministry and gives us interesting insights into life in the Victorian era. These beautiful pictures provide a little bit of history and a little bit of mystery.
Antique lantern slides predate the black and white cinema then color films. Shows of lantern slides were of great interest to communities with little knowledge of the outside world. Canon Spencer came to Canada in 1854 as a young boy in the pioneer days of ox carts, wooden roads and the Fenien Uprising. He became a distinguished clergyman and one of the six founding clerics in the Diocese of Niagara of The Church of England in Canada. His record of the life and times together with his written work give us a great insight into his age.
We value your opinion of this site and would like to hear from you about ways to improve it. We hope you enjoy your World tour.
