An Adult Response 72

Personality Traffic Light

Statue of Jesus and the Woman of SamariaAn example of the "adult" response is to be found in the Samaritan woman reaction. When Jesus meets the woman of Samaria at the well, who is later named Saint Photine by the Early Church,he prompts her in John 4.10, "If you only knew what God gives and who it is that is asking you for a drink, you would ask him, and he would give you life-giving water." The Samaritan woman's reaction and logical "Adult" response comes into play and the only answer that she can find is that he is talking of the water in the deep well in front of them. She therefore answers, "You don't have a bucket and the well is deep. Where would you get that life-giving water?" This very practical and logical response of the Samaritan woman reaction is drawn from her "adult" side.✞

The Evangelist's Response

In the same way, a Christian can lead a person to the Savior via a series of questions such as, "Is God real in your life?" "Why did Jesus die upon the cross?" and "What does this Bible verse tell you about God's love?" Some people do not respond through a mental "adult" reaction but rather an emotional "child" one. The evangelist would want to take a different response to this type of "child" answer.✞
