Christian Sheep Flock 93

Sheep's Clothing

Wolf in a Sheep's ClothingIn any flock of sheep, there are many wolves in sheep's clothing according to Jesus teaching. Thankfully God generally drives out these imposters from the legitimate Body of Christ. Real sheep are easily lost and led astray and therefore need a shepherd to guide them. Jesus, the Good Shepherd declares in John 10.16, "They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd."

Tares in a Wheat Field

WheatBeside the imagery of the sheep flock, Jesus similarly describes a wheat field and the tares or weeds in Greek "zizania" growing in the same field. This word is thought to mean "darnel," a "ryegrass which looks much like wheat in its initial growth." Roman law prohibited the sowing of tares amongst wheat as a criminal act. In Matthew 13.24-30 we read, "Jesus told them another parable, 'The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared.' The owner’s servants came to him and said, 'Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?' 'An enemy did this,' he replied. The servants asked him, 'Do you want us to go and pull them up?' 'No,' he answered, 'because while you are pulling the weeds, you may uproot the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters. First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned, then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.'" In this same way, the Body of Christ is like good seed sown in a field but while everyone is asleep, an enemy comes and plants weeds which look similar to genuine seed, but grow differently. The young inexperienced farmer is tempted to pull out the rogue plants as soon as they appear, but in the process he would unfortunately uproot the good stems too. A wiser head permits both to grow until the harvester can separate them. So it is with the Kingdom of God.✞
